The senior US official confirmed that they recognize Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela, while at the White House, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden received Fabiana Rosales
Mark Wells, undersecretary of the Department of State for the Southern Cone and the Andean Region, assured through a telephone conference with the press that the policy towards Venezuela is maintained, despite the victory of Gustavo Petro in the Colombian presidential elections, according to reports the website We monitor.com.
“Our policy towards Venezuela is not going to change. We have said that we recognize Juan Guaidó as the interim president of Venezuela. We are using our influence and the impact of our sanctions on the Venezuelan regime to lead to democratic presidential elections in 2024,” Wells said.
The US official expressed that the line of his government was very clear: «We are going to oppose any autocratic country and we will not have good relations with Nicaragua, Cuba and Venezuela as long as their people cannot choose their own leadership and do not enjoy human rights”.
During the press conference, asked about the reestablishment of relations between Colombia and Venezuela, announced by Petro in the electoral campaign, Wells said that “any country can have relations with another country”highlighting that both nations “they are sister republics since their founding under Simón Bolívar and also have a rich history of sharing refuge with one another, depending on the situation in their countries. It’s an intertwined story that we understand.”.

Guaidó proposes to retake Comprehensive Agreement
Juan Guaidó also referred to the information given by the Telefónica company, in which it is assured that the Maduro government has intervened 20% of the telephone lines of the Movistar operator to spy on citizens.
«Dictatorship is ESPIONAGE, it is TORTURE, it is MURDER. It is Maduro who has directed every action against human rights. Venezuelan society continues to resist with many sacrifices and risks. We have resisted and we will do so, we will continue to seek justice and denounce the dictatorship », Guaidó published through his Twitter account.
And he added that “Maduro intends -with violence- to cling to power. That is why it is key to articulate international pressure, the demand for a date for presidential/parliamentary elections and to resume the possibility of a Comprehensive Agreement.
