US senator asks for sanctions for the Ortega regime in the face of attacks on the Catholic Church

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz condemned the latest attacks by the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo against leaders and institutions of the Catholic Church in Nicaragua, and ruled that this action is “unacceptable and punishable,” and required a quick response from the Joe Biden government. .

“The deepening of the repression and the escalation of the persecution of Catholics in Nicaragua by the Ortega regime is unacceptable, punishable and requires a rapid response from the United States,” the official said in a statement. statement published this Friday on its website.

Cruz also asked the Ortega regime to immediately release Monsignor Rolando Álvarez and other religious and opposition members who are Ortega’s political prisoners.

“The regime must immediately release the Matagalpa clergy and other dissidents they have imprisoned, and Nicaraguan officials must understand that the United States will hold them accountable for the safety of those prisoners,” Cruz continued.

The official urged President Biden to “respond forcefully to the recent round of brutality” and, if he does not, Congress “should move quickly to demand such responses.”
