MIAMI, United States. — American lawyer and jurist Ketanji Brown Jackson became the first black woman to hold a seat on the US Supreme Court after being confirmed Thursday in a historic Senate vote.
According to the newspaper New York TimesKetanji Brown Jackson, President Joe Biden’s candidate to occupy the position of Judge Stephen Breyer, won 53 votes from senators, enough to obtain the position.
“The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court (…). This is a historic day for America,” US Vice President Kamala Harris, who presided over the Senate vote, wrote on Twitter.
New York Times reports that three of the Republicans joined the Democrats to support Biden’s candidate, who watched the vote with the president from the Roosevelt Room in the White House.
The Republican senators who voted for Ketanji Brown Jackson were Susan Collins, Mitt Romney and Lisa Murkowski.
Despite being confirmed for the post, Jackson is yet to take office, as she must wait for Judge Stephen Breyer to retire to take the oath of office.
