The Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, highlighted yesterday the security work of the Mexican government in the fight against drug trafficking and its high level of cooperation with Washington to confront the “threats.”
The official noted during a press conference that “as far as the Western Hemisphere is concerned, the most serious threat to the United States comes from transnational terrorist criminal groups, mainly focused on drug trafficking, but they are also in business on all sides.
“So the good news is that many countries in the region openly cooperate and work with us to face these challenges. Mexico, its level of cooperation with us is the highest in its history,” he declared in Spanish.
Later, he was asked about the recent release of the White House’s national security strategy in the Western Hemisphere. “How is that strategy going to dictate your relationship with other hemispheric powers like Canada and Mexico?”
In response, Rubio asserted that President Donald Trump’s administration “seeks to collaborate with as many people as possible who face the same threats as us.
“That is, Mexican mayors are murdered in public squares. Mexican journalists are murdered. It is parts of Mexico and Mexican institutions that, in some cases, are compromised, generally by threats from these elements.”
Finally, he stated that the Mexican authorities recognize these “threats” and “that is why they partner with us… of course, we want to work with other governments in the region to face this challenge, and in most cases we have cooperation mechanisms.”
