In published statement This Friday (12), the United States government removed the name of Federal Supreme Court (STF) minister Alexandre de Moraes from the list of people sanctioned by the Magnitsky Law.
The name of the minister’s wife, lawyer Viviane Barci de Moraes, and the Lex Institute, linked to the minister’s family, were also removed.
The decision is made by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.
The sanctions of the Magnitsky Act were imposed on Alexandre de Moraes by the Donald Trump government at the end of July. In September, the list also began to include Viviane’s name.
Understand
The Magnitsky Act is a mechanism provided for in US legislation used to unilaterally punish alleged human rights violators abroad. Among other points, the measure blocks goods and companies from sanctions targets in the USA.
Among the sanctions foreseen are the blocking of bank accounts, assets and interests in assets within the jurisdiction on North American soil, in addition to the ban on entry into the country.
When applying the sanction to Moraes, the US Treasury Department accused Alexandre de Moraes of violating freedom of expression and authorizing “arbitrary arrests”, citing the trial of the attempted coup d’état and decisions against American social media companies.
According to Treasury Secretary Scot Besset, Moraes would be responsible for an oppressive campaign of censorship, arbitrary detentions that violate human rights and politicized processes, “including against former president Jair Bolsonaro”.
