President Adoexpo explained operations of the shipping company Seaboard Marine from Miami and reported normal operations with the DR
The Dominican Association of Exporters (Adoexpo), Karel Castilloconsidered that the stevedores’ strike in 14 large ports in the Eastern United States and in the Gulf of Mexico, which began last Tuesday, will have little impact on the trade of the Dominican Republic, because the ports that maintain the greatest flow of merchandise to and from the North American nation are operating normally.
The business leader explained that the operations of the shipping company Seaboard Marine, which includes a private terminal of almost 80 acres in the Port of Miami, reported that it continues its operations normally with the country.
The reason for the dockers’ strike is the lack of agreement between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) union and the USMX (US Maritime Alliance) employers’ association.
The ILA calls for much higher wages and a complete ban on the automation of cranes, gates and container trucks used to load or unload goods at 36 US ports. These ports handle approximately half of that nation’s ship cargoes.
The strike of more than 45,000 of the 85,000 ILA membersthe first for longshoremen in the eastern United States since 1977, affects more than 43% of US maritime trade and could cost up to 5 billion dollars a dayaccording to JPMorgan.
