Police in Las Vegas, western United States, said Wednesday they have arrested a man suspected of killing a journalist, and the local media said that it is a politician about whose management the reporter had reported.
Jeff German had been working on a series of stories for the Las Vegas Review-Journal on alleged wrongdoing by Clark County Public Administrator Robert Telles, the newspaper said.
German, 69, was found dead outside his home on Saturday, with local media reporting that he had been stabbed multiple times.
“The suspect in the homicide that occurred on September 2, 2022 has been taken into custody,” the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said in a brief statement. He did not name the suspect or give further details.
But the Review-Journal identified Telles, 45, as the arrested man, citing Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo.
Clark County Jail records showed Telles was being held in connection with an ongoing murder investigation. Earlier on Wednesday, local television station KTNV reported that police had searched the official’s house.
The Review-Journal said German had reported on Telles’ management for several months. His articles reported complaints against Telles for intimidation, favoritism and other alleged wrongdoing at a local government office that manages the property of people who die without a will.
“We are relieved that Telles is in custody and outraged that a colleague apparently was killed for reporting on an elected official,” the paper’s executive editor, Glenn Cook, was quoted as saying by the news outlet.
German had recently filed requests for access to public records of communications between Telles and three other county officials, the Review-Journal reported.
Telles is due in court Thursday afternoon, according to Clark County Jail documents.
