US on alert: cold wave threatens record temperatures

EE.UU. en alerta: ola de frío amenaza con temperaturas récord

New York.- Millions of people in the United States are threatened by a new cold wave that will leave record minimum temperatures in some parts of the country, especially in the south and on the east coast, from yesterday Friday until next Monday.

At a time when Americans are still dealing with the ravages of last week’s winter storm – which still leaves 244,579 homes without power according to Poweroutage.com – a new cold wave is looming over the country that will cause already frigid temperatures to drop to historic levels and some states to receive a little more snow.

The south of the warm state of Florida will also be affected by this polar cold wave, the coldest in 15 years, and snow would even reach the coasts of Tampa, Sarasota and Fort Myers.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm will develop just off the coast of North Carolina from Friday night to Saturday night.

The storm will bring heavy snow and widespread winds from the southern Appalachians to the Carolinas, southern Virginia and northern Georgia, as well as flooding along the East Coast.

General accumulations of 4 to 12 inches of snow are also expected in North Carolina and Virginia, and 2 to 5 inches of snow are expected in Georgia and South Carolina.

The SNM explained that an arctic air mass, anchored over eastern Canada, is moving south, which will also impact the eastern two-thirds of the country and cause colder temperatures.

“As the core of extremely cold air moves over the still very warm Gulf, the potential energy released will result in the formation of a coastal cyclone that could dangerously intensify just southeast of the US this weekend,” and will intensify as it expands in size, the SNM further warned.

More than 200 daily cold records could be broken or equaled through Monday, as temperatures will fall more than 30 degrees Fahrenheit (-1.1 Celsius) below normal in some areas, especially in the south and east of the country, CNN highlighted.

In addition, strong winds could cause more tree falls and power outages at a time when many have not yet recovered power, as well as hypothermia.

New York will not be affected by the new snowfall, where the streets are still being cleaned, although it will receive strong winds. According to its mayor, Zohran Mamdani, the city has melted 23 million pounds of snow (10.4 million kilos) and used 116 million pounds of salt last week.

He also noted that the city, where snow has left many still unable to move their cars and making it difficult to walk in some areas, is expanding its response to meet the challenges posed by frigid temperatures.

Last week, ten people died in the Big Apple, six of them from hypothermia, according to Mamdani.
