US Lawmakers Introduce Bipartisan Proposal to Ban TikTok

TikTok approaches a security agreement with the US to prevent its sale

Republican Sen. Marco Rubio announced bipartisan legislation on Tuesday to ban the popular Chinese social media app. TikTokincreasing pressure on owner Bytedance Ltd amid fears the app could be used to spy on or censor Americans.

The legislation would block all transactions by any social media companies in or under the influence of China and Russia, Rubio’s office said in a statement.

Republican Congressman Mike Gallagher and Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi are sponsoring a similar bill in the US House of Representatives.

Bytedance did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
