Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd must pay 110 million dollars in damages for the use of a port that the Government of Cuba confiscated in 1960, according to a US judge’s ruling made public on Friday.
The decision of the district judge Beth Bloomof Miami, comes after he ruled in March that the use of the Havana Cruise Port Terminal constituted trafficking in confiscated property owned by the plaintiff, Havana Docks Corp, registered in Delaware.
“Sentence is entered in favor of plaintiff Havana Docks Corporation and against Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Ltd,” the decision states.
“Plaintiff is awarded $109,848,747.87 in damages,” the ruling said, adding that Norwegian must also pay another $3 million in legal costs and attorneys’ fees.
Norwegian Cruise Line He did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Havana Docks it had also sued cruise lines Carnival, Royal Caribbean and MSC under the Helms-Burton Act, which allows US citizens to sue for the use of property seized in Cuba during the Cold War era.
