A Federal Judge of the United States slowed the attempt of the Donald Trump administration to end the migratory program known as ‘Humanitarian Parole’ that protects about 530,000 Venezuelans, Cubans, Nicaraguans and Haitians of their deportation.
Judge Indira Talwani, from Massachussetts, annulled Trump’s order to revoke the migratory benefit that was established by the previous government of Joe Biden (2021-2025) on April 24.
The magistrate, nominated by former President Barack Obama, specified that the Administration must respect the expiration date of that migratory benefit, which was delivered for a period of two years, and that it cannot eliminate it in advance without a case review in case.
This is a new judicial varapal to Trump’s attempts to give a radical turn to the country’s immigration policy.
In announcing the revocation of the ‘Parole’, the Department of National Security (DHS), led by the secretary Kristi Noem, pointed out that this “does not provide a significant public benefit and has not been necessary to reduce the levels of illegal immigration.”
The Biden government established the ‘humanitarian parole’ in 2022 for Venezuelans, and in 2023 it extended it to Cubans, Nicaraguans and Haitians, in an attempt to expand the legal channels to migrate to the United States and reduce irregular border crossings.
This immigration program, known as ChNV for the acronym of the countries, allows its beneficiaries to reside and work temporarily in the country, after being endorsed by a sponsor with legal residence in the United States.
In October 2024, before the presidential elections, the Biden administration announced that it would not renew the ‘parole’, which meant that the beneficiaries could not extend their legal status beyond the initial two years.
