An American journalist was shot dead by Russian forces in the Ukrainian city of Irpin, in the Kiev region, and another was wounded, Kiev Regional Police Chief Andriy Nyebytov said on Sunday.
First, Nyebytov said that Brent Renaud worked for the The New York Times, but later explained that he had already worked for the newspaper and that he was no longer in the vehicle. according to teamsthe journalist was 51 years old.
“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Brent Renaud. Brent was a talented photographer and filmmaker who contributed to the The New York Times over the years,” the paper said in a statement posted on Twitter by its spokesperson.
“Although he contributed to the The Times in the past (most recently in 2015) he was not serving in any newsrooms of the The Times in Ukraine,” he said.

Nyebytov said Renaud was shot by Russian forces in Irpin, but did not elaborate on the incident. He also did not identify the injured journalist.
“Another journalist was injured. We are currently trying to get the victim out of the combat zone,” Nyebytov said in a statement.
