Miami, United States. – The United States government announced on Friday visa restrictions to more than 250 officials of the Nicaraguan regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, whom he accuses of promoting repressive policies and threatening against democratic institutions. With this measure, the total number of people sanctioned by Washington amounts to more than 2,000 since the beginning of the repressive wave in 2018.
“The Nicaraguan regime is an enemy of humanity”, The Secretary of State affirmedMarco Rubio, in a message posted on the Social Network X. “The Trump administration will not tolerate threats to the security of the United States by a regime that uses migration as a weapon and makes Nicaragua a center for illegal immigrants trying to cross our border,” he added.
Rubio described the Ortega-Murillo government as an “authoritarian dynasty” and said that the sanctions are directed specifically against “the complicit regime.”
In An official statementthe State Department reiterated that visa restrictions apply according to presidential proclamation 10309, which prohibits entry into US territory to people who “formulate, implement or benefit from policies or actions undermorded by democratic institutions”.
“The United States will not tolerate the continuous assault of Ortega and Murillo against Nicaragua“, Underline the text.” When seven years have been completed from the brutal repression of the regime against protesters, we reflect on the courage of those who protested and their desire to live in a Nicaragua free of tyranny. “
The US government said that these measures seek to “promote accountability” by those who have contributed to suppress fundamental rights and have forced thousands of citizens into exile.
The sanctions are added to a broader set of diplomatic and economic measures applied by Washington since in April 2018 social protests broke out in Nicaragua, repressed with violence by state forces and groups related to the ruling party. Since then, international organizations have documented systematic violations of human rights, arbitrary imprisonments and closing of the civic space in the Central American country.
The recent action of the State Department reinforces the hard line adopted by the current administration against authoritarian governments in the region.
