US Embassy in Nicaragua Evaluates How to Help Those Affected by “Julia”

The United States ambassador in Managua, Kevin K Sullivanexpressed solidarity with the Nicaraguan people for the ravages caused by Hurricane Julia, after it entered the early hours of Sunday, July 9, mainly affecting the Caribbean Coast.

“My prayers are with Nicaraguans today after Hurricane Julia passed through the country,” the diplomat said on Monday, through his official Twitter account.

He added that the government of Joe Biden is evaluating “how best to collaborate with the efforts to help those affected,” which according to preliminary data, the figures amounted to 1,500 families.

After its passage, Hurricane Julia, downgraded to a tropical storm, caused destruction when it hit the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua early Sunday morning, in category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. So far, the government of Daniel Ortega has not registered any victims.

The 140-kilometer-per-hour winds tore off the roofs of homes, toppled trees, snapped electrical cables and left some coastal areas without power, while the rains caused flooding in some sectors, local authorities reported.

Julia, which impacted near Laguna de Perlas at 01:15 local time (07:15 GMT), did not degrade immediately after entering land, as expected by the Nicaraguan Institute for Territorial Studies (Ineter), despite the fact that its maximum sustained winds They went down to 140 kilometers per hour.

For her part, the Vice President of Nicaragua, Rosario Murillo, in her customary midday address, through her propaganda media, used the same partisan rhetoric when saying that the victims of the hurricane are “blessed, prosperous and in victories,” because According to her, it was possible to get ahead after the passage of the natural phenomenon.
