The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, will meet tomorrow Thursday with a delegation of legislators from the United States that is in Uruguay on an official visit.
The meeting will take place at the residence in Anchorena (Colonia), and Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo and the Uruguayan ambassador to the United States, Andrés Durán, will also participate.
This visit takes place within the framework of a series of meetings that the US representatives have held with various Uruguayan authorities.
According to diplomatic sources, Ambassador Durán was in charge of promoting this meeting, which determined that a second instance would not be held at the Santos Palace with the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The US delegation is made up of legislators Robert Menéndez, Tim Kain, Ben Ray Luján and Chris Murphy, and it is expected that the main objective of the visit will be to finalize trade agreements. As El País reported this Sunday, the presence of the legislators comes after the senator for the state of New Jersey, Menéndez, formally raised the need to enter into agreements with Uruguay and Ecuador as they are “strong democratic allies in Latin America.”
Other topics to discuss with US legislators
Another topic to be discussed at the meeting will be security. In previous bilateral meetings, both with members of the government and with some municipalities, the US representatives expressed their willingness to collaborate and deepen joint work. In one of those meetings, diplomats even indicated that there is a possibility that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will return to the country, if Uruguay requests it.
These issues are expected to be at the center of the table during tomorrow’s session, in which a barbecue will be shared. The visit of the US legislators is a relevant event for the bilateral and commercial relations between the two countries.
