MIAMI, United States. — A United States government delegation will hold another round of immigration talks this Tuesday in Havana, Biden administration officials assured Press media.
According to information published by america teavethe delegation will be led by Emily Mendrala, Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs.
Questioned about the visit of the US delegation to Cuba, the US State Department did not respond to the request for comments made by that local channel.
Last week, a delegation headed by Rena Bitter, US Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, visited the Cuban capital as part of the dialogue between the two countries to try to stop the immigration crisis in the Straits of Florida.
A State Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity told the US agency Associated Press (AP) that the Washington delegation also addressed concerns about the human rights in Cuba.
The source stated that, at the meeting, Bitter “urged the Cuban government to unconditionally release all political prisoners.”
On the Cuban side, one of the vice ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Cuban regime, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, was present, who reiterated to the US counterpart “the importance of fully resuming immigration and consular services at the embassy in Havana.”
“These conversations are routine and represent a continuation of our commitment of almost 30 years with Cuba on migration issues as neighboring states and are limited to the issue of migration,” said Fernández de Cossío in an interview offered last week to the British agency Reuters.
