US: Cuban Regime Must Stop Harassing Mothers of Political Prisoners

Madrid Spain.- The United States Government denounced the recent ban, by the regime, to travel to Europe to Liset Fonseca, mother of Roberto Pérez Fonseca, and Marta Perdomo, mother of Jorge and Nadir Martín Perdomo; three young people imprisoned for the anti-government demonstrations of July 11, 2021.

The US Embassy in Havana, through Twitter, pointed out: The Cuban authorities “prevented two mothers of demonstrators from the 11J incarcerated board a plane to meet with representatives of the European Union and international organizations”, with the aim of denouncing and making visible the situation of political prisoners in Cuba.

The consular office demanded that the regime “stop harassing Cuban mothers and release all detained protesters.”

The news of the travel ban had been released by the non-governmental organization Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH).

The Director of Strategy of the OCDH, Yaxys Cires, assured CubaNet that these mothers had been invited by that organization and that they had already arranged an agenda of meetings with members of the European Parliament, European officials in Madrid, Brussels and Geneva, in the latter city, they would meet with officials of the UN Human Rights Council.

“We are facing arbitrariness, a violation of article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is not enough for the Cuban regime to unfairly imprison the children of these mothers, but it also prevents them from going out to denounce these abuses,” Cires declared.

For her part, mother Liset Fonseca explained to this medium that at the José Martí international airport in Havana, after dispatching their bags, they were detained at Immigration. There, an official took their documentation and made them wait about 30 minutes before informing them that they could not travel.

The only explanation was that they were “regulated”.

Robert Perez Fonseca, the eldest son of Liset Fonseca, is sentenced to 10 years in prison for demonstrating on July 11 and breaking a painting of Fidel Castro. Marta Perdomo’s sons, Jorge and Nadir, are serving sentences of eight and six years in prison, respectively.
