A semi-automatic rifle specially designed for children? US senators on Thursday denounced the business practices of a maker of lethal small arms and light weapons.

The JR-15, inspired by a Assault rifle used in several massacres, is “absolutely disgusting”, deplored the head of the Senate Democratic Party, Chuck Schumer.

“The last thing we should do is reduce the size of these weapons of wars and market them to children,” saidby requiring the US Consumer Protection Agency (FTC) to investigate the manufacturer.

The rifle, barely one kilo, shoot real bullets. Delivered with magazines for one, five or ten rounds of 22 caliber long rifle ammunition, it was marketed in January for $389.

The company WEE1 Tactical, which sells the gun, describes it as “a slice of American freedom,” intended “for the little hobbyist.”

“Given the epidemic of armed violence among young people and shootings”, a weapon like this “simply should not exist”Schumer lashed out, citing the case of a 6-year-old boy who shot his teacher this month at a Virginia school.

Parliamentary attempts to regulate the sale of assault rifles are often blocked by Congress, where the gun lobby wields strong influence.
