MIAMI, United States. — The United States Border Patrol (CBP) reported today the disappearance of 23 Cuban rafters who were shipwrecked in the vicinity of the Florida Keys during the passage of Hurricane Ian.

The announcement was made in Twitter by Walter N. Slosar, chief agent of that federal agency. The officer said the search was supported by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

“U.S. Border Patrol agents along with the support of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the landing of a migrant on Stock Island, Florida,” the Slosar report states.

According to the officer, at least four people survived the shipwreck.

“Four Cuban immigrants swam to shore after their boat sank due to inclement weather. The Coast Guard began an operation to search for 23 people”, adds the information.

The deterioration of the weather conditions in the Straits of Florida has not prevented dozens of Cuban migrants from continuing to risk their lives to try to reach the United States.

During the last week, the US Coast Guard reported on the rescue of several rafters from the Island who tried to arrive illegally in the Keys area.

On Tuesday, the US Coast Guard arrested seven Cuban migrants who arrived in Pompano Beach, in Broward County, amid adverse weather conditions from Hurricane Ian.

Last Monday, the Coast Guard also detained a group of rafters who intended to cross the Straits of Florida prior to Ian’s passage through western Cuba.
