The US Coast Guard announced Sunday an investigation into the implosion that destroyed the Titanic submersible, killing all five people traveling toward the Titanic wreckage.
The Guard said it has formed a Marine Board of Inquiry (MBI), its highest level of investigation into this North Atlantic tragedy that has attracted global attention.
“My primary goal is to prevent a similar incident by making the necessary recommendations to improve the security of the maritime domain around the world,” Jason Neubauer, chief of investigation for the Coast Guard and leader of this investigation, said at a press conference in Boston. .
“The MBI is already in its initial phase of collecting evidence, including debris salvage operations at the incident site,” it added.
Neubauer said the US investigation could also make recommendations about the possible pursuit of civil or criminal penalties “if necessary.”

Titan was reported missing last Sunday and the Coast Guard said Thursday that all five people aboard the sub were dead after the ship suffered a catastrophic implosion.
A debris field was found at the bottom of the sea, 500 meters from the bow of the Titanic, which is almost 4 km from the ocean surface and about 600 km off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
Canada, which helped search for the submersible, said Saturday it was conducting its own investigation.
The Canadian-flagged cargo ship Polar Prince towed the Titan out to sea last weekend but lost contact with it an hour and 45 minutes after the submersible plunged into the ocean depths.
The announcement of the implosion capped a multinational search-and-rescue operation that has gripped the world’s attention since the tourist boat went missing.
