US: CNE does not publish results because it would show Edmundo González's victory

Karine Jean-Pierre, White House press secretary, said on August 14 that the United States (US) rejects the idea put forward by Brazil that Venezuela should hold a repeat presidential election as a way to clarify the dispute that has arisen around the results released by the National Electoral Council in which President Nicolás Maduro was named the winner of the July 28 elections.

The United States government has rejected the fact that two weeks after the presidential elections in Venezuela, the National Electoral Council (CNE) has not yet released the total votes. For the White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, the governing body is not publishing the complete results because it would demonstrate the victory of President Nicolás Maduro.

Karine Jean-Pierre held a press conference on August 14. During the meeting with journalists, she referred to the preliminary report of the electoral experts of the United Nations (UN) who were involved in the last elections and which, although initially confidential, was published last Tuesday, August 13 by decision of Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

“More than two weeks after the elections in Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro has still not clarified the results of the July 28 presidential elections. Yesterday, the UN panel of experts who were recently in Venezuela published their provisional results, and I encourage everyone to take a look at the online report when they have a moment,” she said of the document in which the experts concluded that the CNE “failed” to comply with “basic measures of transparency and integrity” when announcing the results of the July 28 presidential elections.

He expressed his rejection of the fact that the report also stated that the CNE also did not follow the national legal and regulatory provisions, and all established deadlines were not met..

“In the Panel’s experience, the announcement of the result of an election without the publication of its details or the disclosure of tabulated results to the candidates is unprecedented in contemporary democratic elections,” it reads.

In this regard, the White House spokeswoman reiterated that “it is very clear to the majority of the Venezuelan people, the United States and a growing number of countries, that the CNE has not provided complete, detailed and counted votes because they would show that Edmundo González Urrutia won the vote.”

In response to this, he insisted that “Maduro must acknowledge this and engage in a constructive, inclusive and good-faith dialogue with the opposition to peacefully restore democratic norms in accordance with Venezuelan electoral law and the wishes of the people.”

On the other hand, he rejected the idea put forward by Brazil that Venezuela should hold a repeat presidential election as an alternative to clarify the dispute that has arisen around the results released by the National Electoral Council in which President Nicolás Maduro was named the winner of the July 28 elections.

He stressed that despite his country’s position regarding Brazil’s proposal, Joe Biden’s administration will evaluate options to encourage and “pressure” President Nicolás Maduro to recognize the election results.

The US official stressed that the responsibility to tell the truth lies with Maduro and the authorities. “It is clear that Edmundo González (candidate of the Unitary Platform) has the majority of votes and the government must recognize it,” added the US official.
