MIAMI, United States. — The United States Border Patrol today intercepted 33 Cubans who made landfall in the Dry Tortugas National Park, in the Florida Keys.
According to the report of Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar, the group was made up of 29 adults and four minors.
“Today, 33 Cuban immigrants were taken into the custody of the United States Border Patrol after making landfall on a wooden boat in the Dry Tortugas National Park in the Florida Keys,” the official reported in Twitter.
The US authorities have repeatedly called on Cubans not to risk their lives in the Florida Strait, especially in stormy conditions. However, the exodus does not stop.
This Monday, several Cubans were detained by the Coast Guard while trying to reach the Florida coast in artisanal boats.
“Coast Guard crews prevented these unsafe boats from illegally landing in the US ahead of Subtropical Storm Nicole off the Florida Keys. Fortunately, we rescued these people before the storm worsened,” said that entity on its Twitter account.
The National Hurricane Center of the United States (NHC) indicated that the passage of the subtropical storm Nicole through Florida will leave swells and adverse weather conditions that will spread throughout the eastern coast of the peninsula, and that could threaten possible illegal maritime incursions.
From October 1 to November 8, 2022 they were intercepted by the Coast Guard 1,646 Cuban raftersapproximately a fifth of all migrants from the Island who were detained during the past fiscal year, which ended on September 30.
