US Border Patrol detained 50 Cuban rafters in the last day

MIAMI, United States. — On the last day, the United States Border Patrol detained 50 Cuban rafters who arrived in three different groups in the Florida Keys area.

“During the last 24 hours, United States Border Patrol agents with the support of local partners responded to three migrant landings in the Florida Keys and encountered 50 Cuban migrants,” he said in Twitter Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar.

The official noted that two of the groups were intercepted on Long Key, while the other was on Key Marquesas, a group of uninhabited islands located about 50 kilometers west of Key West.

The detention of the Cubans occurs as part of the reinforcement of controls in the Florida Keys area, the scene for several months of the massive arrival of migrants by sea.

Only between last Sunday and Tuesday of the current week, the United States Coast Guard deported 647 Cubans. That force warned the nationals of the Caribbean country about the dangers of launching into the sea in artisanal boats.

“Our crews are trying to prevent people from losing their lives during these dangerous sea voyages,” Lt. Travis Poulos of the 7th Coast Guard District said in a statement.

From October 1, 2022 to January 8, 2023, US Coast Guard crews had intercepted 4,795 Cuban migrants, 1,387 fewer than those apprehended and deported in all of fiscal year 2022, which were 6,182 .
