MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban opponent Luis Ponce Sánchez, based in the United States, denounced that his son, Wagner Ponce Alfonso, was recently regulated and recruited for compulsory Military Service in the province of Ciego de Ávila.
In statements made to CubaNetthe father explained that the “kidnapping” occurred after his son was preparing to process the passport, a necessary document for the application to the new humanitarian parole that allows the entry to the US monthly of 30,000 Cubans, Haitians and Nicaraguans.
Ponce Sánchez explained that, as a result of the new immigration policy announced by the Biden administration, he tried to get his son to apply for humanitarian parole. However, when he went to his respective processing office to get his passport, the authorities informed him that it was regulated.
As if that were not enough, three days later the 18-year-old young man was recruited for the Active Military Service (SMA), which in Cuba is mandatory for young people of legal age up to and including 28 years of age.
According to Ponce Sánchez, it is a retaliation by the regime against him due to his anti-Castro activism both inside and outside Cuba.
“Until when we Cuban families have to continue suffering because of the Castro-communist dictatorship and its henchmen. I speak on behalf of all the mothers and fathers in Cuba who suffer with those perverse decisions of that system. My son does not have to wear a uniform that has caused so much pain to the Cuban people. I am totally opposed”, expressed Ponce Sánchez in communication with CubaNet.
The father recalled the numerous incidents in which conscripts from the compulsory military service have lost their lives while carrying out missions and jobs for which they were not prepared, such as the fire at the Matanzas Supertanker Basein August of last year.
