United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern for the safety of Venezuelan opposition leaders
On Wednesday, July 7, the Secretary of State of the United States (US), Antony Blinken, and the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, assured that they are willing to support a process towards the restoration of democratic norms in Venezuela.
The assertion they made was exposed in a release. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that Joe Biden’s government seeks to support Venezuelan democracy. In the text, he reiterated the thesis that Edmundo González Urrutia, presidential candidate for the Unitary Platform, received the largest number of votes in the July 28 elections and added that the minutes that the opposition posted on a website confirm his statement.
Both officials (Blinken and Guterres) expressed their concern for the safety of Venezuelan opposition leaders. They also rejected what they called “political violence,” the escalation of repression and arrests against citizens who participated in demonstrations against the election results announced by the National Electoral Council in which Nicolás Maduro was named the winner of the elections.
Miller said the UN secretary-general called on the Maduro government and the Venezuelan opposition to begin talks on a peaceful transition to democratic norms.
Earlier, Marks Wells, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, said that the North American nation welcomes the efforts of Mexico, Colombia and Brazil to facilitate the transition towards the recovery of democracy in Venezuela.
