US and Ukraine outline “updated” peace framework to end war

The US governments and Ukraine They assured this Sunday that The talks held in Geneva made it possible to “develop an updated and refined peace framework”according to a joint statement released by the White House.

Both delegations reaffirmed that any future agreement to end the war with Russia must “fully respect the sovereignty of Ukraine” and establish “a just and sustainable peace”, the agency reported EFE.

The meeting, described as “constructive, focused and respectful,” marked “significant progress” in harmonizing positions between Washington and kyiv, according to press reports.

The peace plan promoted by the Trump Administrationwhich includes 28 points, has been the subject of criticism from experts and from American and European political sectors for the concessions it would imply for Ukraine.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the talks “probably the most productive and significant so far.” as reported cnn.

Rubio acknowledged that there are still “not insurmountable” issues to resolve and that the calendar imposed by Trump could be “flexible.”

“Our goal is end this war as soon as possiblebut we need a little more time,” he said.

Reaction from kyiv

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky adopted a more cautious tone than Washington.

He assured that changes were made to the plan that adjust to the Ukrainian position and stated that “a lot is changing” while both parties work on the necessary steps for a possible end to the war.

Ukrainian Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak described the bilateral meeting as “very productive” and thanked Trump for his commitment to reaching an agreement, according to cnn.

Hours earlier, the American president had criticized kyiv for showing “zero gratitude,” a comment that generated discomfort among European diplomats.

Europe tries not to be left out

In this scenario, signs of progress between Washington and kyiv increased the unrest in Europe.

According to cnn, The United Kingdom, France and Germany prepared a counterproposal which eliminates references to territorial concessions, softens the language on Ukraine’s eventual accession to NATO and establishes the current front line as the basis for any future negotiations.

The document also eliminates the 100-day deadline for elections in Ukraine.

European diplomats expressed concern about being left out of the process. “They can’t leave us outside the tent,” a Western official told the US network.

Another diplomat noted that no agreement can imply the recognition of occupied territories or impose limits on the Ukrainian armed forces.

He German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared himself “skeptical” about the possibility of reaching an agreement within the deadline set by Trump, citing the notable differences between proposals.
