Tensions between representatives of the United States and China over the Chancay Megaport they continue to increase. This time, the project generated a direct exchange of messages on social networks.
It all started when Zhu Jingyang, Chinese ambassador to Colombia, spoke on the social network
“By talking about a ‘shared future’, the US ambassador in Peru is plagiarizing the Chinese proposal. Welcome aboard in this common desire for the shared future of all humanity, different from ‘America First,'” wrote the Chinese diplomat.
The response did not take long. Navarro also replied in X. “‘America First’ does not mean ‘America alone’. Stay in Colombia because there are many problems there!” he added.
Are the United States and China fighting over Peru?
The Port of Chancay project has become a point of friction within the growing trade rivalry between the United States and China.
The infrastructure is managed by Cosco Shipping Ports Chancay, a company with 60% Chinese capital, which has raised concern in Washington about Beijing’s influence in a facility considered strategic for Pacific trade.
The government of President Donald Trump took advantage of a recent court ruling, issued in the first instance and still pending appeal, that limits the supervision, inspection, regulation and sanctioning capacity of Ositran over the port terminal.
The United States warned that “cheap Chinese money” could compromise Peru’s sovereign control over this key infrastructure for regional trade.
The Chinese reaction was immediate. During a press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian rejected the US statements.
The official stated that China “categorically rejects the US statements” and expressed its “firm opposition and strong dissatisfaction with the United States’ blatant fabrication and smear campaign against Chancay.”
