Madrid, Spain.- The Western Hemisphere’s Office of the United States Department of State Department denied Wednesday the official discourse of the Cuban government around the US embargo.
In a publication in the Social Network X (Before Twitter)the institution described as a “false narrative” the version of Havana on the so -called “blockade”, which is responsible for the economic crisis that the island crosses.
“The false narrative of the ‘blockade’ against Cuba is only one of the many lies disseminated by the dictatorship in decline on the island. The Cuban people and the world can see it with their own eyes. If the ‘revolution’ goes so well, why does the dictatorship fear so much to truly free and democratic elections?” He said the message.
The pronouncement adds to other questions of the US government about the political situation in Cuba, where the authorities maintain the prohibition of opposition parties, limit civil freedoms and do not summon free elections.
A week ago, Cuban Chancellor Bruno Rodríguez presented in Havana the official report on the effects of the United States embargoto which the economic and social crisis attributes almost exclusively. The document qualifies the “blockade” as “genocidal policy” and rules out that the situation responds to internal errors. According to the text, it is “cynical” to affirm that the difficulties come from the socialist model or management failures, ensuring that the embargo is “the main obstacle to development.”
The report indicates alleged impacts on sectors such as health, energy and foreign trade, with millionaire losses, and includes examples such as the frustrated purchase of medical supplies and the impossibility of marketing the Heberprot-P in the US. UU. Also blames the embargo on the electrical crisis and concludes that it constitutes a systematic violation of human rights and international law.
The United States embargo on Cuba, which the ruling call “blockade”, is presented by the regime as a policy aimed at provoking hunger and suffering to the Cuban people. However, the origin of the restrictions denies that narrative. The first sanction was not against Castroism, but against the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship in 1958, when the Dwight D. Eisenhower administration suspended the sale of weapons for human rights violations.
Already under Fidel Castro, the massive expropriations of US companies in 1960 led Washington to suspend the purchase of sugar and ban exports to the island, with the exception of food and medicines. The missile crisis in 1962 was the only real naval block, after discovering Soviet missiles on the island. Then, the food and medicine trade continued, although limited by the lack of credit and distrust of Cuban state companies.
While Havana insists on the UN that the embargo is the main cause of the country’s impoverishment, reality shows otherwise: thousands of Cubans emigrate every year to the United States, the same country that the regime accuses of “blocking them” to make them suffer, which demonstrates the contradiction between the official rhetoric and the decisions of their own people.
