Ambassador of Uruguay to the Organization of American States (OAS), Washington Abdala.

Abdala told the OAS that Uruguay has been attentive and closely following the events of recent days and hours in Ukraine, and that the President of the Republic, Dr. Luis Lacalle Pou, has maintained that the Russian military forces “launched an offensive against Ukraine.

“Being Uruguay a country that always bets on peace, we believe that this is the only possible way to fight. That is why we reject actions contrary to public international law and the guiding principles of the United Nations that we have all given ourselves by universal contract”.

“By the way, what is happening mobilizes us, it hurts us, and that is why it is urgent for us to get out of this situation as soon as possible to resolve the conflict in a civilized manner,” said Abdala.

He recalled that the principles in which Uruguay believes are those of “refraining from resorting to the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or independence of any State.”

He said that it is also appropriate to remember the United Nations resolution 2202 (2015) of the “Minsk Agreements”, for this reason “the sovereignty, independence and integrity of Ukraine” must be respected.

Always ahead, peace

“Uruguay wishes to recall that it is a fundamental, sacred principle to resolve conflicts and controversies by peaceful means. Always ahead, peace”, he expressed.

The Uruguayan representative in the OAS insisted that it is essential for the coexistence between the countries and the development of friendly relations “to maintain all lines that are conducive to the path and the objective of peace.”

Uruguay reiterates its “attachment to the strict application of international law and rejects any type of action contrary to it.”

Abdala expressed anguish for the victims, for the innocent victims, for the deaths that have occurred. “That overwhelms us and moves us, we feel deep pain and as Gandhi said: ‘There is no way to peace, peace is the way’”.
