Uruguay responded to Ukraine that it does not support referendums in areas occupied by Russia

Sebastián Hagobián, a member of the Broad Front International Affairs and Relations Commission, has participated as an observer in one of the referendums that were held over the weekend in areas of Ukraine occupied by Russia, to carry out the annexation of territories.

In the last hours, an informative note published by the Ministry for the Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine emerged, in which Uruguay is included among the countries that would be endorsing the legitimacy of the referendums organized by the Russian Federation, in the occupied Ukrainian territories.

Given this situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay issued a statement through which it states that “in no way has the Uruguayan government expressed support for said referendums, nor have there been actions or declarations that directly or indirectly allow us to suppose that the national authorities endorse these clearly illegal pronouncements.”

The Uruguayan government “has supported on numerous occasions the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine and rejects the occupation of parts of its territory.” Likewise, it has demanded within the scope of the United Nations that the Russian Federation “withdraw from all the Ukrainian territories occupied through its military operations”.

Today (Monday, September 26) the Uruguayan foreign minister, ambassador, Francisco Bustillo, reiterated this claim in his speech before the United Nations General Assembly.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has asked the Ukrainian authorities “to know the reasons why the Ministry for the Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine has included Uruguay in its information note among the countries that would be legitimizing the aforementioned referendums.”

“Uruguay does not endorse actions of any nature aimed at legitimizing the occupation through the use of force on part of Ukrainian territory, as it has repeatedly expressed in its official positions made before multiple international forums,” the Foreign Ministry clarifies through a statement.

It also states that Uruguay “has not sent observers for these referendums.”

The Secretary of State states that “the individual participation of Mr. Sebastián Hagobian, a member of the Broad Front, does not compromise or affect in any way the position of the Uruguayan State and its government on this issue. He has thus made it clear to the Ukrainian authorities.”

For its part, the Broad Front issued a statement in which it states: “Given the press reports, we want to inform you that Sebastián Hagobian is not in Russia on behalf of the Broad Front or the Uruguayan Assembly. He is making a private trip and in no case does he represent or have the support of this political force.”
