Uruguay replied to Ukraine that "has not sent observers" to occupied territories

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a statement in which it responds to the Ukrainian government for including Uruguay among eight countries that guarantee the legitimacy of the referendums organized by Russia in occupied Ukrainian territories.

The Ministry of Reintegration of the Occupied Territories of Ukraine published a statement on September 24 in which they state that Uruguay, together with Belarus, Syria, Venezuela, Egypt, Togo, South Africa and Brazil, “please the Russian criminals” by having a delegate in those places.

Without naming him, the Ukrainians questioned the presence of the leader of the Broad Front Sebastián Hagobian (Uruguayan Assembly), who would control the development of the vote in Zaporizhia, according to Search.

The Foreign Ministry reported in a statement that “Uruguay has not sent observers for these referendums.” And he clarified the role of the Front leader: “The individual participation of Mr. Sebastián Hagobian, a member of the Broad Front, does not compromise or affect in any way the position of the Uruguayan State and its government on this issue.”

The government said that at no time did it support referendums and there have been no actions or statements that “directly or indirectly allow us to assume that the national authorities endorse these clearly illegal pronouncements.”

The Foreign Ministry recalled the “numerous opportunities” in which it has supported the principles of “territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine” and “rejects the occupation of parts of its territory.”

He also pointed out that Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo made this claim in his speech before the United Nations General Assembly.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has asked the Ukrainian authorities to know the reasons why the Ministry for the Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine has included Uruguay in its information note among the countries that would be legitimizing the aforementioned referendums,” he said.
