Uruguay joins the fight against food loss and waste promoted by the UN

Uruguay is one of the nations that will have an inter-institutional scope to coordinate the fight against food losses and waste, since tomorrow, Monday 26, the National Committee for the Prevention and Reduction of Food Losses and Waste will be reactivated.

The resolution will be applied from the opening of a week of activities, within the framework of the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, declared by the United Nations Organization (UN), as every September 29 .

Led by the Ministry of the Environment, with the technical secretariat of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the National Committee for the Prevention and Reduction of Food Loss and Waste ( PDA) in Uruguay will be officially formed

For this topic, a planned launch activity will be carried out in the Executive Tower, to be held between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and will include the participation of Adrián Peña (Minister of the Environment), Fernando Cuenin (Head of IDB Operations), Gonzalo Kmaid , (Assistant Program Representative and Officer in Charge of FAO), Natalia Basso (Coordinator of Quality Management of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Argentina), ChiaraFioretto (Ministry of Environment) and Cynthia Lima (Ministry of Environment).

Data

The United Nations Organization (UN) explains on this issue in a statement that “food losses occur at the beginning of the chain, from agricultural production and the harvest of vegetables, the slaughter or capture of animals until the food reaches the retailer, but without including it”. Food waste occurs in retail sales and consumption, domestic and public or private gastronomic services, in the last links of the food chain.

The reduction of food losses and waste is a global priority agreed in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) defined in 2015 and agreed among all the member countries of the United Nations Organization. Target 12.3 of SDG 12 Sustainable Consumption and Production proposes: “halve global per capita food waste at the retail and consumer level and reduce food losses in production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.

“Uruguay is no stranger to the problems associated with FLW, since the first estimates regarding the generation of Food Losses and Waste indicate that approximately 11% of the total food available for human consumption is lost or wasted annually, which which is equivalent to about 1 million tons a year”, adds the text.
