Uruguay incorporates dimension of environmental sustainability to the candidacy of the 2030 World Cup

The Minister of the Environment, Adrián Peña, and the president of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), Ignacio Alonso, discussed the intention to integrate environmental sustainability into the selection process for the venue for the 2030 World Cup, whose candidacy Uruguay shares with Argentina, Paraguay and Chile. That year coincides with the goal of meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Peña remarked, at a press conference on Monday the 15th at the Executive Tower, that it is the responsibility of the portfolio he directs to raise awareness about caring for the environment and promote a change in habits.

He also stated that the meeting was a good opportunity to learn about the commitment of the body that governs Uruguayan football to advance in terms of sustainability in the management of sports complexes and events. In this sense, he affirmed that 2030, the date on which Uruguay could be one of the venues for the Soccer World Cup, coincides with the goal of compliance with the SDGs, so, according to President Lacalle Pou, “ It would be the World Cup for Sustainability”.

At this point, Alonso indicated that Peña had informed him about the international insertion policy and the implementation of the SDGs articulated with the productive sectors. On the other hand, they discussed the selection process for the candidacy of venues for the world tournament, which will be held in 2024.
