On Sunday, June 19, the progressive economist and former guerrilla, Gustavo Petro, was elected president of Colombia, after beating the real estate businessman, Rodolfo Hernández, in the runoff.
Petro, who will succeed Iván Duque from August, is the first left-wing president in Colombia, and also the elected vice president, Francia Márquez, is the first person of African descent to hold that position.

All the leftist governments of America immediately greeted the elected president of Colombia.
In the last few hours, so did the Uruguayan government, through a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In its declaration, the government salutes the people and the government of Colombia “for the exemplary electoral process that culminated yesterday (Sunday, June 19) with the election of the new president of the sister country, through the free, democratic and transparent pronouncement of the Colombian citizenship.
At the same time, Uruguay congratulates the elected president, Gustavo Petro, for his victory in said civic act and wishes him “success in his future administration.”
“The government of Uruguay hopes to continue deepening the historic relations of friendship and cooperation that unite both nations,” the Foreign Ministry of the Republic stated in the statement.
