Uruguay and Brazil promote coordinated governance in tourism

“There is a lot of room to grow” in receptive tourism in Brazil, which ranges between 15 and 20%, said the minister of the area, Tabaré Viera. At the Brazil-Uruguay Integration Forum, held in Rivera, the chief called for “developing and strengthening” public-private governance on the border between the two countries. In addition, Uruguayan and Brazilian universities agreed to promote the development of the sector in that area.

Viera mentioned the importance of joint work for tourism development, through the strategic lines of the Ministry of Tourism, in coordination and synergy between the national and departmental governments, as well as with the private sector.

The statements were made during the Brazil-Uruguay Integration Forum, on Saturday the 30th, at the headquarters of the Departmental Government of Rivera. The general director of the Secretariat, Ignacio Curbelo, also participated in the event; the national director of Tourism, Roque Baudean; the Mayor of Rivera, Richard Sander, and the Prefect of Santa Ana do Livramento, Ana Tarouco.

There, the University of the Republic (Udelar), the University of Technology (UTEC) and the University of Labor of Uruguay (UTU) signed, with three higher education institutions in Brazil, a memorandum of understanding to cooperate and develop tourism and culture in the border area.

On the occasion, Viera emphasized the need to “develop and strengthen” governance with this integration and on the border. In this sense, he considered it necessary to establish a coordination between Uruguay and Brazil.

He recalled that the northern country represents between 15 and 20% of the tourism received by Uruguay and that it ranks second, behind Argentina, with 50%. “There is a lot of room to grow,” she said, in press statements.

To do this, the ministry is focused on promotion, in addition to advertising, presentations, workshops and participation in Brazilian fairs, particularly in Rio Grande do Sul.

With the forum, the Seventh Binational Enogastronomy Festival, held between July 27 and 30, in the International Park, closed. This event was attended by the Vice President of Brazil, Hamilton Mourão. Presidency
