Uruguay and Brazil culminated the process of incorporating into their legal systems protocols on the liberalization of trade of merchandise from free zones between the two countries and on the trade of yerba mate.

The so-called Additional Protocols 83 and 84 will enter into force shortly. Before that, the countries coordinate the communication with the General Secretariat of the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI).

“By way of background, it is recalled that Additional Protocol No. 83 on free zones allows the total and immediate relief, for an indefinite period, of the Common External Tariff of all the goods included in ACE No. 18 and that are produced in all the free zones of Uruguay and Brazil,” the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

As established, “Additional Protocol No. 84 on yerba mate establishes a new technical criterion in health matters to avoid the imposition of a non-tariff barrier that hinders the entry of yerba mate from Brazil into Uruguay; this agreement will also have a valid for an indefinite period of time”.

This new “opens the possibility for Uruguay to attract new productive investments that would have a positive impact on the generation of new quality jobs”, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
