San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chis., At the end of a four-day tour of Tapachula, the president of the Citizens’ Committee in Defense of Naturalized and Afro-Mexicans, Wilner Metelus, stated that the Mexican government should rethink the immigration issue because the thousands of foreigners who are in that city waiting for a response to their procedures they are suffering a lot
.
In an interview, he said that if the thousands of migrants stranded they cannot get their documents, later the situation could be worse for them and for the authorities themselves, because the Mexican State has no real capacity to solve the problem
.
He pointed out that many children and women are sick, which would cause a stronger crisis, for which reason he proposed holding a meeting, convened by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador with leaders of the region, with the purpose of seeing how it can be solved this problem.
Metelus asked the federal government to suspend the deportation of migrants to their countries, since are fleeing violence and insecurity, or are looking for work to survive
.
Citizens in transit, he insisted, only want to have their document and leave Tapachula to look for a job that will help them survive in other large cities in Mexico. There are more than 14,000 Haitians living in rooms and they have no money to pay rent or eat. Some sleep in the street with their children and there are pregnant women who do not have access to health
he stated.
