The Municipality’s works advance in different areas of Melo

The Departmental Administration of Cerro Largo continues to develop important works in different parts of the city of Melo, in a process that the mayor Cristian Morel himself described as “a stage of concretions”, after several years of planning and partial execution of projects that today are beginning to become a reality.

In dialogue with EL PROFESIONAL Morel highlighted that in the departmental capital, work started in the previous administration is continuing, but with a new dynamic that seeks to finish what is pending and, at the same time, incorporate improvements that guarantee greater durability of the interventions.

One of the most visible examples is that of the Murguía neighborhood, where works that had been left unfinished and that generated concern among both the authorities and the neighbors are being completed. In that area, the works include the complete paving of several streets, the construction of curbs and the installation of the storm drain system, a key infrastructure to avoid flooding that historically affected the neighborhood on days of intense rain.

The mayor recalled that the progress of these works was possible after regularizing the agreement with ANCAP, which allowed the Municipality to once again access the supply of bitumen, an essential element for street paving. “It was a debt that we had to pay in order to move forward. Today, with the materials in hand, we are complying with the neighbors and closing a stage that had been postponed for too long,” Morel pointed out.

Another strong point of the municipal works program is developed in the Popular neighborhood, where the Municipality carries out a comprehensive intervention with an urban and social vision. In this sector, tasks include the installation of modern public lighting, drainage and paving works, as well as the leveling and compacting of streets that remained in poor condition for years.

“Popular was a historically intervened neighborhood, but never with a definitive solution. What we are doing now is taking a firm step, thinking about the durability of the works and the well-being of the neighbors,” the mayor explained.

RIVERA PARK

In addition to these urban interventions, the Municipality promotes notable transformations in emblematic public spaces, such as the Rivera Park and the Biopark, which are part of a strategy to recover the city’s natural and recreational heritage.

In Rivera Park, new children’s games, courts, rest and family recreation areas are being installed, with the idea of consolidating a green space that functions as a community meeting point. Improvements are also planned in accesses, lighting and internal paths, with the purpose of providing greater security and comfort to visitors.

BIOPARK

Meanwhile, in the Biopark, works are being carried out to expand and improve the animal enclosures, along with the construction of a panoramic viewpoint that will allow the natural environment of the place to be appreciated from above. As Morel explained, the aim is to strengthen the link between the community and nature, promoting an educational and tourist space that combines recreation and environmental conservation.

“We are preserving an environment that is a symbol of Melo. The Biopark not only has recreational value, but also educational and environmental value. We want children and families to be able to come, enjoy, learn and feel proud of having a space like this in their city,” said the communal chief.

All of these works—both in neighborhoods and parks—are part of an urban planning policy that the Municipality has been developing since the beginning of the period, with the purpose of improving the quality of life, modernizing infrastructure and recovering public spaces.

“They are works that can be seen, that change the appearance of Melo, but above all they transform the daily lives of the neighbors. People want to see progress, they want to feel that their neighborhood is progressing, and that is what we are achieving,” Morel emphasized.

The Mayor assured that, together with the directorates of Works and Urban Development, they are working on an agenda that includes new interventions in other neighborhoods of the city and also in localities in the interior of the department, where road and lighting improvements are being carried out.

“We are going step by step, but with a clear vision: balancing the development of the capital with that of the interior. Melo is the heart of the department, but each town also needs works and attention. That is the challenge we have and we are meeting it,” he concluded.
