How the Senate looks and who will take over a seat next year
The chamber will only have three games. The MPP vote was historic: it achieved the same number of senators as the entire National Party.
After the national elections this Sunday, five parties obtained parliamentary representation and, therefore, will occupy seats in both Deputies and Senators for the upcoming legislature.
The upper house was where there were no major surprises, because it will be occupied by leaders of the Frente Amplio, the National Party and the Colorado. The opposition, according to the Electoral Court’s scrutiny data, is the one who obtained the majority in the Senate.
The Popular Participation Movement (MPP) contributed half of the senators of its party, that is, of the 16 legislators there will be nine who are from the sector led by former president José Mujica.
Thus, for the MPP, the following will take office: Alejandro Sánchez, Blanca Rodríguez, Cristina Lustemberg, Daniel Caggiani, Sandra Lazo, Sebastián Sabini, Cecilia Cairo, Alfredo Fratti and Lucía Etcheverry.
In the same sublemma—For a Uruguay for the people—list 95 of the Seregnistas was presented, which obtained only one senator; It will be former minister Mario Bergara. Currently, this sector has three legislators in the upper house.
For its part, the 711 list led by Raúl Sendic and which also made up the sublemma, gave the surprise by exceeding 50,000 votes and Felipe Carballo will assume a seat.
El Abrazo, in alliance with La Vertiente, obtained a seat. As Lustemberg will take over 609, the place will be for Edgardo Ortuño.
The Unity for Hope sublemma obtained three seats: two places that Óscar Andrade and Constanza Moreira achieved for the Communist Party, and one for the Carolina Cosse sector—La Broad—In the event that Cosse achieves the vice presidency, it will be Silvia Nane who occupies your banking.
The FA bench is completed with the place obtained by the Socialist Party, for which Gonzalo Civila will enter as senator.
IN THE PN
In the National Party the surprise came from list 40, led by Javier García. Those led by the former Minister of Defense reached four senators, while Aire Fresco achieved three, which means that the sector founded by Luis Lacalle Pou loses its consolidated power in the last two periods to the nationalist internal movement. For their part, Herrerismo and D-Centro each reached one Senate seat, which will be assumed by Luis Alberto Heber and Nicolás Olivera, respectively.
After the historic vote of those led by García, in addition to him, Sergio Botana, María Fajardo and Sebastián Da Silva arrive at the Senate.
In Aire Fresco, Álvaro Delgado—whose alternate is José Luis Falero—and Graciela Bianchi would enter the Senate. President Luis Lacalle Pou heads all the white lists, so if he decides not to take office, it will be Martín Lema who will occupy that place.
THE COLORADOS
The Colorado Party achieved a better vote than in 2019 and will have five seats in the Senate. Of these, two are for Pedro Bordaberry’s lists, two for Andrés Ojeda’s sector and one for Robert Silva. In this way, the red bench would be made up of: Pedro Bordaberry, Tabaré Viera, Andrés Ojeda, Gustavo Zubía and Robert Silva.
