UPM begins the start-up process of its plant in Paso de los Toros

The UPM’s second pulp milllocated in Pueblo Centenario (Durazno), obtained the Environmental Authorization for Operation and may start the commissioning process.
“UPM has presented all the information required to obtain the permits and a extensive environmental monitoring program that covers the water and biota of the Negro River, air, soil, noise and socioeconomic aspects,” the company of Finnish origin said in a statement.

“For weeks, all phases of the process will be adjusted, gradually increasing production until reaching the expected levels both in volume and pulp quality, under strict safety and environmental standards,” he said.
When the works finished on December 23, 2022UPM planned for the plant to be operational in the first half of 2023.

The investment of the company was a total of US$ 3.470 millionincluding a deep-water port terminal, a eucalyptus nursery and other works.
The new plant will generate “7,000 direct jobs” and another “10,000 induced jobs with a contribution of 2% of the GDP of the Uruguayan economy”, assured the company, adding that the annual production will be around 2 million tons of eucalyptus cellulose.
