Up to $52 million to change your old taxi for an electric one: this is how the incentive works in Colombia

The Ministry of Transportation program seeks to modernize the taxi service and reduce operating costs throughout the country.

In Colombia, the commitment to the energy transition continues to gain strength, and one of the key fronts is individual public transportation. Therefore, the owners of taxis more than 10 years old can now access incentives of up to 52 million pesos to replace your vehicles with 100% electric taxisin any city in the country.

According to information from the Presidency of the Republicthe benefit is part of the vehicle fleet modernization programfinanced with resources from the Fund for the Promotion of Technological Advancement (FOPAT). The initiative is led by the Ministry of Transportation and has support from the Law 2294 of 2023.

The scheme contemplates up to 42 million pesos for the replacement of the taxi and up to 10 million additional intended for the purchase and installation of the electric charging infrastructure in the owner’s home, one of the points that most concerned drivers interested in making the leap to this technology.

Less expenses and more profitability for taxi drivers

According to the Ministry of Transportation, the program not only seeks to reduce the environmental footprint of the sector, but also lower operating costs of the taxi service. Official estimates indicate that electric taxis allow savings of up to 43% on fuel and up to 65% in maintenancecompared to internal combustion vehicles.

Added to this are other benefits in force by law, such as discounts on SOATreduction in the value of the technical-mechanical review and the exemption from movement restrictionswhich facilitates a more continuous and profitable operation of the service.

The Minister of Transportation, Maria Fernanda Rojashighlighted that the program puts drivers at the center of the energy transition.

“We are advancing in an energy transition that puts people at the center. We want taxi drivers to have modern, efficient and more profitable vehicles, while we contribute to reducing emissions and improving air quality in cities. This program shows that taking care of the environment can mean more income and better conditions for those who make a living from transportation,” he stated.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, the implementation of the program will allow progressively modernize up to 54,000 taxis by 2036consolidating a public policy focused on transportation decarbonization and the improvement of air quality in the main cities of the country.
