We live under the shadow of insecurity and in the midst of this tense climate, President José Jerí launched a message that is already generating controversy. For the president, the state of emergency is not a temporary measure, but a way of life that could be prolonged indefinitely if crime demands it.
“Until we clean the country it will be necessary to live in a state of emergency. We have to be very clear about it. We have to clean the country of criminals and I am of the idea that we have to apply the measures that have to be applied in the time they have to last to achieve results,” he said in an interview with El Comercio.
Jerí knows that Lima and Callao are experiencing an unprecedented crime wave, with hitmen and extortion becoming monsters that multiply on every corner. And that is why he did not hesitate to point out another problem that he considers key in this war: the uncontrolled sale of telephone chips.
For the president, the operators must also assume responsibility in this issue. Crime uses telephone lines to sow fear, and he wants to put a stop to it. He pointed out that those who sell and distribute chips must act with limits and rigor.
“Do not believe that only the State will solve this problem; a single person will not move the country forward by defeating crime. This is a commitment, a crusade for all of us to save ourselves,” he noted.
He also referred to the members of the National Police: “The mistake of one police officer cannot label the entire institution. There was a systematic weakening of the institutions that were precisely supposed to do that work with the INPE,” he stated.
