Vicente Zambada Niebla “The Vicentillo”
Was Arrested by the military in Mexico City in 2009 However, months later he was extradited to the United States.
Mexican authorities identified “El Mayo’s” son as the person in charge of controlling the operational, logistical and security structure of the Sinaloa Cartel. He was also credited with being the mastermind behind various executions against authorities and members of antagonistic groups.
In the United States he was sentenced to 15 years in prison, however, before completing his sentence he was released because he became a protected witness in that country.
He was one of the key witnesses in the trial against Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
Edgar Valdez Villarreal “Barbie”
In 2010, in the State of Mexico, the man considered one of the most wanted drug traffickers by the Mexican government was arrested.
“Following intelligence work that began in June 2009 and was carried out in various parts of the country, Valdez Villarreal was arrested,” the Public Security Secretariat said in a statement.
“La Barbie” was one of the most wanted criminals because he was part of “Los Beltrán Leyva” and was accused of being involved in organized crime, illegal deprivation of liberty, possession of cartridges for exclusive use by the Army, crimes against health and qualified homicide.
Although he spent five years in prison in Mexico, he was wanted by the United States. In 2015, he was extradited to that country, which wanted him in the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana for drug trafficking and money laundering.
Emma Coronel
In the United States, Emma Coronel, wife of “El Chapo” Guzmán, also had to face American justice. She was arrested in February 2021 for the crimes of conspiracy to distribute heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine for importation.
Coronel pleaded guilty after reaching a deal with federal prosecutors. She was released in September 2023, after serving two and a half years.
