The iconic prow of the Titanic, immortalized by James Cameron in his 1997 film, is seen almost intact, sunk to the bottom of the sea, in previously unpublished images of the ship’s wreckage recorded in 1986 and released Wednesday.

The extensive video released by the US Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute shows the ruins of the renowned ship, recorded in July 1986 with the cameras of the Alvin manned submarine and with those of another similar device, Jason Junior, operated remote.

In the images, published on the YouTube account of the oceanographic institute, the remains of the boat can be seen, covered in rust and marine plants, among other things.

The emblematic prow looked almost intact

The video was recorded in an expedition that allowed the human eye to see for the first time the remains of the ship, which was heading from Southampton (England) to New York (USA) and sank in the North Atlantic in April of 1912, leaving about 1,500 dead.

The bow, which served as the setting in Cameron’s film for a romantic scene between Rose, starring Kate Winslet, and Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, can be seen clearly in the video, almost intact despite the passing of the years.

Ruins located in 1985

In September 1985, a team from the American institute, led by Robert Ballard, in cooperation with the French center “Institut Français de Recherche Pour L’exploitation de la Mer” (Ifemer), located the ruins of the Titanic.

Nine months later, in July 1986, the American team returned to the site and managed to record those images.

Almost the length of a movie

The total duration of the video that was shown this Wednesday is one hour and 21 minutes, that is, a little less than that of a movie. In September of last year, the OpenGate Expeditions organization had revealed a video of the Titanic ruins in 8K.

The publication of the images seeks to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Cameron’s film, released in December 1997, and which tells the story of Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater, two young people from different social classes who meet and fall in love on board of the ocean liner
