Unprecedented exhibition Revenguê highlights the theatrical format of art

The Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR), located in Praça Mauá, the port area of the city, opens this Saturday (15) the unprecedented exhibition Revenguê: an exhibition-scene, by the Rio de Janeiro visual artist, writer and playwright Yhuri Cruz. According to MAR’s chief curator, Marcelo Campos, the novelty is due to the exhibition’s theatrical format itself, which takes place from scenes, where Cruz makes, along with other artists, presentations that will take place more than once during the project.

New works will be created before the public. The first stagings are scheduled for tomorrow and Sunday (16), at 2 pm. The next stagings are still being planned, but the idea is to have at least one staging every month of the show. The exhibition will be on display until October 1st, open from 11 am to 5 pm, from Thursday to Sunday.

“I would define this show as an exhibition-scene, but also as an exhibition that finds the artist with an expanded desire for creation”, commented Campos, who is also the curator of the exhibition. revenge, alongside Amanda Bonan, Jean Carlos Azuos, Amanda Rezende and Thayná Trindade. He explained that Yhuri Cruz’s creation involves drawings, objects, installations and, above all, dramaturgy. “It is a dramaturgical exposition, constructed from a text that he writes, which is the revenge. On the other hand, the text generates for him a base for the stagings”.

revenge it’s a word that doesn’t exist, said Yhuri Cruz. Derived from the English word revenge, which means revenge. According to the artist, the story deals with the revenge of life and the politics of presence. The exhibition is divided into four sections and the public will feel like they are in a kind of arena, with bleachers and a red floor, where they will see the theatrical and creative scenes unfold live.

Marcelo Campos highlighted that the artist has used the term afrofuturism for the exhibition. “It really is something to think about: the possibility that you have from the idea of futurism, which is a white, European, Italian idea, and having the presence of a black artist thinking about broader issues, around fable creation, inventing planets, beings, think about the future of these planets. I think this pretty much defines what we have when we encounter the creation of Yhuri Cruz – a fabled creation, of non-existent situations, but based on other contemporary discussions, of current life”.

Over the coming months, the exhibition will also receive shows and lectures. MAR’s chief curator stated that, with these peculiarities, the exhibition will have significant public appeal. “First, because the design of the exhibition has bleachers, places for people to sit. Already in this drawing there is the conception of theatrical reception to this public”. On the other hand, attention was drawn to the fact that the scene will be put on video, which will also be able to be watched, as if people were entering a screening room. “So, there are several paths there for the public to reflect on what they are seeing”.

new languages

The presentation of new languages and artistic representations is one of the main objectives of MAR. Therefore, the director and head of the representation of the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) in Brazil, Raphael Callou, commented that as Cruz is a young artist from Rio de Janeiro who produces works that are always part of a story, bringing the repertoire of revenge for the museum, it is to guarantee the public new possibilities for observation and reflection on artistic creation. For Callou, Yhuri stands out with archives of blackness and her research through staging and theater.

Since January 2021, MAR has been managed by OEI, an international cooperation organization that has focused on culture, education and science since its foundation in 1949. partnership with the Roberto Marinho Foundation.
