A federal judge based in the state of Mexico issued an informal preventive detention to retired general Eduardo Enrique Gómez García, accused of being a participant in the corruption network headed by former Secretary of Public Security (SSP) Genaro García Luna, and his legal situation will be resolved until next week, when it will be decided whether he will be criminally prosecuted.
Through this network, more than 5 billion pesos were diverted that were intended for the purchase of equipment and the contracting of services for the Federal Centers for Social Rehabilitation (Ceferesos), during the government of Felipe Calderón.
Data from the Federal Public Ministry indicate that in the period from December 2008 to August 2013 he served as Commissioner of the Deconcentrated Administrative Body, Prevention and Social Readaptation, from where he signed various service contracts illicitly.
The Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR) charged him with possible participation in organized crime, with the purpose of carrying out operations with resources of illicit origin and embezzlement.
In the initial hearing, personnel from the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime formulated the accusation, and in response to this, Gómez García’s defense requested the duplication of the constitutional term of 72 hours to define the legal situation, so it will be resolved no later than next Wednesday.
In the government of Vicente Fox he held various positions in the then Attorney General’s Office of the Republic, including Coordinator of Planning, Innovation and Institutional Development. Gómez García was arrested on Tuesday in Puebla by the Federal Ministerial Police.
