University students protest against Free Trade Agreements with China

Five years after the beginning of diplomatic relations between Panama and China and its rupture with Taiwan, a group of university students protested against free trade agreements with that country.

According to Cristhoper González, one of the protesters, the so-called Asian giant, has been giving the country donations that a nation with a privileged geographical position does not deserve, “We are not their backyard” or anyone else’s, he noted.

“We will not be a colony of China, a communist government led by Xi Jinping where human rights are not respected, there is no freedom of expression and much less social freedom,” protesters chanted in front of the Chinese diplomatic headquarters in Panama, located in an exclusive neighborhood of the Panamanian capital.

“Panama’s diplomacy is very submissive to China and worst of all, they support Russia in its claims to dominate the world, you just have to see the war crimes in Ukraine and the threats to Taiwan,” said González.

also argued that Panamanian diplomacy is fragile and that with the trip of the head of Foreign Relations to China it became clear that only crumbs will be received from that empire that violates the human rights of its inhabitants.

In their statement, the protesters stressed that what the Chinese company Panama Ports Company (PPC) is doing is unheard of. A few months after obtaining the approval of the board of directors of the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) to renew the concession contract for another 25 years it has already been denounced by the Swiss shipping company Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), which has stated that they want to impose two companies to receive maintenance and inspection services in refrigerated containers.

The protesters grouped in front of the Chinese Embassy in Panama, carried banners with slogans against the Chinese empire and its commercial ambitions in the world and Panama, as well as support for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who continues to leave thousands dead with his invasion of Ukraine. , more than 8 million displaced people and worsening the world food crisis to levels never seen before due to the breakdown of the supply chain.
