University professors in the country are the lowest paid in the region

The Observatory of Universities, based on reports from Other Voices in Education and data obtained from secondary sources and key actors of the university system in Latin America, indicated that the impoverishment of university professors accelerated from 2013 and that in 2022 the majority of professors in public institutions earn less than 1 dollar a day

University professors in Venezuela are the worst paid in Latin America, said the Observatory of Universities. The non-governmental organization pointed out that those who earn the highest income for their full-time work earn $45 a month and those who earn the least receive $27 a month.

With the purpose of celebrating the Day of the University Professor in Venezuela, the NGO published a thread in Twitter in which he makes a comparison of the salary status of educators in the region.

According to the Observatory of Universities, the impoverishment of academics accelerated as of 2013 and in 2022 the majority of professors in public institutions earn less than 1 dollar a day, “in a country with accumulated inflation of 195% ( OVF) and a Family Food Basket of US $459.08 (Cendas)”.

The report stated that Cuba is the country with the second worst salaries in the region, “but even Cubans are better paid than Venezuelans.

In third place are the Nicaraguan university professors who, the observatory added, share with their peers in Venezuela and Cuba conditions that violate their labor rights.

Another of the comparisons made by the entity is that “the professor with the highest category and productivity at the National University of Colombia earns 288 times more than his peers at the Central University of Venezuela and the one who earns the least income in Haiti earns 24 times more than those of lower echelon in the national public institutions».

The data disclosed by the Observatory of Universities was obtained from a report prepared by Other Voices in Education in 2021 and was updated with secondary sources and key actors of the university system in Latin America.
