Students, teachers and graduates must pay to elect various positions in the house of studies
Next Wednesday, November 12, the 2025 University Elections will be held, in which students, graduates and teachers of the University of the Republic (UDELAR) must vote.
To pay, you only need your identity card.
WHERE DO YOU VOTE?
The Electoral Court made available a registry search engine, where you can search with the ID number or the name of the person if they are authorized.
Voting, which is mandatory, will be carried out in person from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Students vote in their respective places of study, while teachers vote in the place where they work. Meanwhile, graduates must attend premises arranged by the Electoral Court in the city where they reside.
Those voters who are in places where vote-receiving commissions do not operate may vote by correspondence—within the department to which the circuit belongs. They must do so at an office of the National Post Office authorized for this purpose the day before the election (that is, Tuesday, November 11).
UDELAR emphasizes that observed voting will not be enabled.
WHO IS ENABLED?
• Students who have taken at least one exam or won a course in the two years prior to the election. Also those who, having passed the previous cycle, have entered that year, are enrolled and have not lost their courses.
• Teachers with more than one year of seniority.
• Graduates who appear in the records with a degree issued by UDELAR.
You can access the registry to check if you are authorized to vote in the Electoral Court page.
WHAT IS VOTED?
Members of all orders of the General Assembly of the Senate are elected. Also those of the Senate Assembly of all faculties.
Then, the members of all orders of the councils of the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Information and Communication are elected; also the orders of graduates and students of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Finally, in the rest of the faculties, only the student order of the Council is voted on.
WHAT ARE THE SANCTIONS FOR NOT VOTING?
If they do not vote and do not give a justification, students will be sanctioned with the impossibility of taking exams for two consecutive periods.
If the person is a teacher or graduate, they must pay a fine equivalent to five readjustable units (UR), the amount of which will be determined on the date of the election (the October UR has a value of $1,839).
HOW AND WHEN CAN I JUSTIFY NOT VOTING?
The University will open the period to process the justification for non-voting the day after the election and will remain in force for two months, that is, it will last until Monday, January 12, 2026.
This process will be carried out through the Electoral Court website.
THREE JUSTIFICATIONS ARE ALLOWED FOR NOT VOTING:
1) Suffering from illness, disability, or physical impossibility that prevents, on election day, attending the Vote Receiving Commission. The person must present a medical certificate; In the case of documents issued by private institutions, it must be accompanied by a professional stamp.
2) Being absent from the country on election day. The Court establishes that “It may be justified by any means of documentary evidence as long as [se] Make clear the dates of departure and entry into the country.” As an example, the organization suggests presenting the certificate issued by the National Immigration Directorate, the tickets, the work certificate or other documents “of similar nature”.
In this case, the 60-day period of justification for non-voting after the elections will begin to run from the day of entry into the country.
3) Having been unable to vote for reasons of force majeure. “It will be considered a cause of force majeure to be outside the department in which the voter is to vote on the day of the election, which will be proven with documentary evidence or sworn statement,” establishes the Electoral Court.
