The National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (Anuies) reported that its members “review and update their security protocols” to fully comply with their obligation to protect the integrity of their communities and provide a forceful response to violence, threats and misinformation.
This measure is adopted in response to the “situations of violence” that have occurred in recent weeks on various student campuses, such as false bomb threats and prior to the murder of a UNAM high school student.
Luis González Placencia, head of Anuies, expressed his solidarity with the educational institutions affected by these circumstances, and joined the call of the UNAM rector, Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, to “reject and condemn any type of virtual threats, which only seek to sow fear among the student population and disrupt their academic life.”
Given the “unfortunate contexts,” González Placencia recognized the rectors’ commitment to security, stability and peaceful coexistence in university spaces, as well as their conviction that listening, dialogue and co-responsibility are the pillars that must guide institutional life in times of uncertainty.
“We express solidarity with the university communities and reaffirm our commitment to work together to preserve safe educational environments, free of violence and open to critical and plural thinking.”
He called on universities and higher education institutions (HEIs) to continue promoting a culture of peace with respect for plurality and to firmly defend the autonomy and integrity of academic spaces.
Additionally, at the Closing of the Anuies-TIC UNAM 2025 Meeting, Héctor Benítez Pérez, director of Computing and Information and Communication Technologies at UNAM, highlighted that the digital transformation of HEIs must not only be innovative, but also sustainable.
“We have made progress in infrastructure, connectivity and digital educational models, but we have also learned that true technological progress must be aligned with principles of social, environmental and economic sustainability.”
He warned that ICT has the power to reduce gaps, optimize resources and generate scalable solutions, but its impact will be truly transformative if it is done responsibly, thinking in the long term, in communities and on the planet.
